Meet a Mom – Abby Silverman | Essex County Moms

Today’s Meet A Mom is our good friend, Abby Silverman!

1.How many kids do you have and what are their ages?

I’m the proud mother of 4! Matthew is 17. Daniel is 14. Justin is 11 and Amanda is almost 7.

2. How long have you lived in Short Hills/Millburn/Livingston and what made you decide to live here?

My husband, Barry, and I moved to Livingston from New York City when our oldest child turned one. That was over 16 years ago. I was offered an awesome pediatric opportunity in this area. And that it was close to family sealed the deal.

3.Tell us about your business and what other local things you are involved in!  And how did you get started?

As a pediatrician with over 20 years of experience and Medical Director for a sleep-away camp in the Catskills, I was approached by a local mom/ friend to help her help her daughter navigate through the exciting yet challenging world of puberty. She had known about Turning Teen, an educational program created by two pediatricians in Michigan to “start the conversation” for tweens and their trusted adult. I’m thrilled to bring Turning Teen to New Jersey and welcome the opportunity to teach puberty in a fun, interactive and medically accurate way. It’s my passion project. For more information or to sign up for a program, please check out our website at

I’m also very involved with my Temple in several committees including being Co-Chair for the Board of Education.

4.Favorite thing to do when you need “me time”?

Ha! You’re kidding, right??? But seriously, I love a spa day when I have “me time”. Barry, if you are reading this, that’s a hint.

5.Favorite place for dinner with kids?

With 4 busy kids and a husband that travels, my favorite place for dinner is at home when everyone is home. My kids are so happy when I cook and I’m happy when we are together. Tonight we are having Chicken Parm; it’s their favorite.

6.Most enjoyable place to hang out?

I love to hang out at the pool or the beach on a beautiful sunny day.

7.How do you balance your career and being a mom?

It’s not easy. I have a sign in my kitchen that reads “Good Moms have dirty ovens, sticky floors and happy kids!” It reminds me to prioritize. I also try to stay organized. Oh and I’m not afraid to ask for help. It really does take a village.

8.Proudest mommy moment(s)?

While at a parent-teacher conference, the teacher told me that they had a new student from a different country came into their class. She wanted the class to go around the room to introduce themselves and say two things about them. She asked who wanted to go first. My son did. He said, “Hello, my name is Justin and I like meeting new friends and playing basketball.”

9.Can’t believe that happened mommy moment!

I’ll never forget the time when my son was playing first grade soccer and the referee called a time-out so my son could tie his shoes. He just stood there staring at his laces as minutes which seemed like hours passed. Everyone was staring at him, waiting and waiting. Finally I screamed out. “He doesn’t know how to tie his shoes!” He was mortified. I think he finally forgave me.

10.Best advice you have gotten from a mom?

“Always wear comfortable shoes!”    My own mom always preached this. I never listened to her growing up as I love shoes but I do now. I’m cranky when my feet hurt.

11.Best piece of advice you can give other moms!

Let your kids jump in puddles if they want. And jump with them.

12.One thing people would be surprised to know about you…

I can do the moonwalk!
